Washington Redskins Derrius Guice feels right at home in D.C.
By Ian Cummings
Derrius Guice is an NFL running back for the Washington Redskins. And so far, he’s loving every second of it.
The Washington Redskins pulled off a masterful move in the 2018 NFL Draft to acquire electric LSU running back Derrius Guice. The team traded down from the No. 44 spot, moving to the No. 59 slot instead. In the process, they received a third-round pick, one that would compensate for the lost pick in the trade for Alex Smith.
At the time, it was believed that the Washington Redskins would lose out on Derrius Guice. Guice was a widely-known first-round talent, and it was already a shock that he had fallen this far. As the night went on, however, questions surrounding his character began to churn along the rumor mill. One by one, teams passed on the polarizing player, and before long, he was available for the Washington Redskins at No. 59. It was a pick they didn’t hesitate to make.
In the days following Guice’s slide, there was mass speculation surrounding the issues that facilitated his fall in the draft. But until now, we hadn’t even had a glimpse of Guice’s work with the team. The rookie minicamp has given spectators the pleasure of hearing first-hand accounts. And so far, the reviews are only positive. Per Jake Kring-Schreifels of Redskins.com, Jay Gruden has been pleasantly surprised with Guice’s energy and eagerness to learn.
"He’s really excited to be here and he’s willing to learn. He’s first in the meeting, got his playbook open and just soaking in all the knowledge."
Guice, when interviewed, was observably upbeat about his opportunity with the Washington Redskins, describing the group as a “family”. For a prospect who fell to the end of Round 2 due to purported character concerns, Guice seems to be faring well in the beginning stages of his NFL career. As Guice puts it, it’s “all football, all day”. And he’s loving every second.
Just as he feels right at home on the practice field, Guice should be a perfect fit on the field for the Washington Redskins. The team hasn’t had a complete back of Guice’s caliber for years, and his skill set should immediately elevate not just the run game, but the offense as a whole.

Rookie minicamp ends tomorrow, and soon, Guice, along with all the other rookies, will join the rest of the roster for organized team activities. It will be exciting to see how Guice bonds with Alex Smith in the backfield. Smith has endless knowledge of the game, and Guice seems to have an unrelenting thirst to learn.
