The Washington Redskins keep making great decisions. At No. 241, they selected Virginia Tech cornerback Greg Stroman.

The Washington Redskins current defensive backs coach, Torrian Gray, was previously employed at Virginia Tech, coaching former Washington Redskins defensive backs like Kendall Fuller and Kyshoen Jarrett. With their first pick in Round 7, the Washington Redskins selected another former student of Gray with the Hokies: Cornerback Greg Stroman.

Stroman joins college team mate Tim Settle in this draft class, who went to the Washington Redskins with their fifth-round pick. The Washington Redskins needed depth at the cornerback position, and Greg Stroman can give them that and more. Stroman is undersized at 5-foot-11, 186, but he’s mobile and agile in coverage. He can keep up with even the quickest receivers, and he’s very aware of where the ball is slated to go. He produced on a high level in the ACC, logging nine interceptions and 26 pass deflections over three years as a starter.

Stroman’s natural coverage ability should guarantee him a roster spot, if he can bulk up a bit. He has the height and length for the NFL game, but his minus weight is concerning, as he may not be  able to hold up in the more physical NFL. One goal of the Washington Redskins should be to help Stroman gain muscle weight. If they can succeed in nudging him toward that goal, then he could exceed expectations.

Stroman joins a secondary flush with young talent. Accompanied by Quinton Dunbar, Fabian Moreau, and Joshua Holsey at cornerback, and Montae Nicholson, D.J. Swearinger, Troy Apke, and Fish Smithson at safety, Stroman is an ascending player with good upside in the seventh round. The familiarity between Redskins defensive backs coach Torrian Gray should strengthen Stroman’s early development.
