The Washington Redskins have made their first move on the undrafted free agent market. They added Indiana wide receiver Simmie Cobbs to their roster.

The 2018 NFL Draft was a major success for the Washington Redskins. They were able to add a lot of high quality players with their pick, fix their run stopping issues, and find the long-term starter at the running back position. Now, the next step for them this offseason will be to continue adding undrafted free agents to their roster.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Redskins have already added one to their roster. That would be Indiana’s Simmie Cobbs. Cobbs is a great value as an undrafted free agent, and he could easily fit in on the Redskins.

The Redskins are currently searching for some depth at the receiver position. They have three fairly established options with their starting lineup, but behind them, there are a lot of question marks. Ryan Grant is gone. Brian Quick re-signed, but barely played last year. Maurice Harris and Robert Davis both spent parts of last season on the practice squad. So, there are some openings for Cobbs to make the roster.

Cobbs’ main competition will come with Harris, Davis, and Mr. Irrelevant, Trey Quinn. However, Quinn is more of a slot option, so he would have the inside edge, literally and figuratively. Cobbs would have to take an outside job from either Harris or Davis if the team is willing to carry six receivers on the roster.

That is something that Cobbs could do. He has a 6-foot-4 frame and was a big, jump-ball threat at Indiana. In his final season, Cobbs was able to catch 72 passes for 841 yards and a career-high eight touchdowns. He has the physicality and size needed to be a possession receiver, and that’s something that the Redskins could use as an alternative in case Josh Doctson struggles with drops again.

Cobbs doesn’t have great speed and will need to work on getting a bit stronger at the next level if he is going to be effective. He has the physical nature to be a big body guy, but he just needs to get more functional strength to battle against more physical corners. In Washington, he will have a chance to do that.

It’s somewhat surprising that Cobbs wasn’t taken on Day 3. He looks like a potential starting receiver if he can improve in the NFL. But as an undrafted free agent, he is a terrific value, and Washington deserves praise for being able to land him.
