The Washington Redskins became the beneficiaries of a late slide on Friday night, picking up LSU running back Derrius Guice in Round 2.

It took one pick. And another. And another. Several more. A trade back. And when the Washington Redskins were on the clock at No. 59, LSU running back Derrius Guice was there, waiting for them to pick him up. The Washington Redskins obliged.

This pick, in a vacuum, is an outrageous steal for the Washington Redskins. They got the best pure runner in this draft class and a third-round pick back. Guice, from a talent perspective, can come in, start, and flourish right away.

Guice’s balance through contact is unreal, and he has all the necessary traits to be a three-down back at the next level. Guice is the elite running back that the Washington Redskins offense needed.

However, while Guice is supremely talented, there is a cause for his slide. Teams were genuinely and seriously concerned about character issues with Guice. Per Ian Rapoport, Guice was described as immature and high-maintence by NFL teams. His visits, including his time with the Washington Redskins, could have gone better, and there is serious concern over whether he’s a good culture fit in the NFL.

If the Washington Redskins can straighten out Guice’s character concerns, then this is an incredible draft already, just after two rounds. The team shored up their defensive line in Round 1, going with Da’Ron Payne out of Alabama. And in Round 2, they managed to have Derrius Guice fall to them after trading back and acquiring a third-round pick. Credit Bruce Allen when he deserves it. The team has been on top of things so far.
