The Washington Redskins are in need of a running back in the 2018 NFL Draft. It sounds like the team is targeting a running back in the second round.

The 2018 NFL Draft is now just three days away, and the Washington Redskins draft strategy is starting to become clearer. Armed with the No. 13 pick, the Redskins are going to have a chance to land a quality player and will likely land a falling top 10 prospect if the quarterbacks rise as they are expected to.

Right now, the Redskins have a plethora of options with the 13th pick, and among them will be a running back. Derrius Guice is one of them, and he would be an upgrade to the team’s running game for sure. However, it seems far more likely that the team is going to wait until the second round and take a prospect there.

Per WalterFootball.com’s Charlie Campbell, the Redskins are among the teams interested in many of the top running back prospects in this draft. And he pointed out a few options for the team in the second round of the draft.

More from Riggo's Rag

"Two of those teams that are in the running back market are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington Redskins. In speaking to sources at both of those teams, they like Chubb and Penny. If they miss out on Michel and Guice they still have good options available in those two. Chubb and Penny are options for each team’s second-rounder. Jones is also in play for Washington."

It makes sense that the Redskins would demonstrate interest in these three players, and Guice and Michel as well, but it seems likely that they won’t get either of those two unless they trade up. So, Jones, Chubb, and Penny seem like the most realistic options.

Of the group, the Chubb has the most talent. Chubb is a power back from Georgia who probably would have been a top 15 pick in this class had he not suffered a major knee injury as a sophomore. Because of this, Chubb is likely going to be a Round 2 pick, but he will be able to be a great between the tackles runner at the next level. Plus, he has some explosive ability still. He’s not much of a threat in the passing game, but he would pair well with Chris Thompson. So, he could be a top option for pick 44.

Jones has visited the Redskins and Penny would be a sensible option if the top five backs are off the board. Jones has three-down potential and has some elusive ability in the mold of Jamaal Charles. Meanwhile, Penny is an underrated commodity who could have a big impact as a starting running back and a returner. The only question about him is whether or not he will be able to quickly learn an NFL offense, as he had some trouble doing so at the Senior Bowl.

Regardless of what happens, the Redskins are going to look for more talent at running back, and all of these options will be on their board. It’s just a matter of which one is going to be available when the team is on the clock in Round 2.
