Sony Michel is one of the best running backs in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Washington Redskins brought him in for a visit on Wednesday.

Wednesday was the final day for NFL teams to bring in potential prospects in for visits before the 2018 NFL Draft. The Washington Redskins were busy during the day, visiting with a few prospects and making sure that they do all their homework on top options before they make their selections starting next Thursday.

The Redskins needs largely remain the same heading into the draft. They need a nose tackle, a running back, and a left guard to really solidify starting spots across the offense and defense. But of those three positions, the running back the team lands could make the biggest impact in a starting role. Samaje Perine and Rob Kelley are best suited as backups while Chris Thompson can’t be a full-time lead back. So, getting a true leader at the position would be a good move.

According to ESPN’s John Keim, Sony Michel was among the final visits to the Redskins. Michel is one of the bevy of early-round options the Skins could target and have met with.

"The Redskins also hosted Georgia running back Sony Michel Wednesday, the last day teams could host potential draft picks. The Redskins have expressed an interest to try and upgrade at running back and have shown strong interest in other backs, notably LSU’s Derrius Guice. The question becomes when would they pick one — if indeed they do. At 13 it might be too high for Guice and 44 might be too low for the backs they would consider upgrades. They went to dinner with Guice the night before his Pro Day and also hosted him at Redskins Park. They also hosted Ronald Jones II after attending his makeup Pro Day."

Working out Michel is a smart move for the Redskins. He is one of the best running backs in this class, and he could have a big impact on the offense that selects him.

Michel officially came in at the No. 2 spot on my running back big board, and I compared him to Alvin Kamara at the NFL level. He has excellent between the tackle ability, explosive, game-breaking speed, and a solid pass catching skill set. Given that Michel split a workload for most of his years at Georgia, he should come into the league fresh and should be a three-down back.

For Washington, Michel could be an early-downs linebacker and he could end up splitting some third down snaps from Chris Thompson. This would be a good arrangement, as it would ensure that Thompson could still be mixed into the offense, but the team would also have another third down option, which they lacked a bit after Thompson was hurt last year.

Right now, Michel is just an option for the team. They have met with many running backs, and it looks like the team will almost certainly grab a running back with one of their first two picks.
