The Washington Redskins have made several moves on the offensive line this Monday. They have now re-signed Tony Bergstrom to provide depth on the interior of the unit.

Last season, the Washington Redskins cycled through offensive linemen at a ridiculous pace. The offensive line dealt with so many injuries that at one point, squad had 11 offensive linemen on the active roster. Because of this, the team learned the importance of having quality depth, and that is why they have made moves to shore up this area.

With Ty Nsekhe signing his restricted free agent tender and Brandon Scherff’s fifth-year option being picked up, the Redskins were well positioned at every area except center. The team did have Chase Roullier ready to take over as the starter, but the team had little experienced depth behind him. For that reason, the team brought back Tony Bergstrom.

Bergstrom was signed by the Redskins in late October to help the interior offensive line deal with the injury bug. Bergstrom made three starts for the Redskins in relief of Roullier when he was injured, and he did an okay job at center. He wasn’t more than a decent option, but he provides continuity as a backup and will be insurance in case the team can’t add more talent in the draft.

It’s likely that the Redskins gave Bergstrom the veteran minimum to keep him in Washington. He may get a little bit more than that, but the fact is that he probably didn’t have a lot of other options. After all, he is turning 32 in August and has been on four teams in the past three years. So, a return to Washington made the most sense for him.

The Skins shouldn’t expect to get much out of Bergstrom. If anything, he is just an interior backup who may not be active on game days if the team can add quality offensive line depth in the draft. But still, retaining a guy who played in nine games, started three, and has positional versatility is never a bad move. The team has to be praised for doing this.

Re-signing Bergstrom will do practically nothing to deter the Redskins from going after a guard in the draft. They will have many options to do so on Day 2 and Day 3, and players like Billy Price, Frank Ragnow, and Wyatt Teller will all get consideration. So at the end of the day, this is a solid move to add some veteran depth, but it is nothing more than that.
