Courtland Sutton. 19. player. 123. . Wide Receiver. SMU

It appears that the Cowboys are going to be letting Dez Bryant go at some point in the near future. Bryant is coming off a down year and it’s possible that he could be on the down side of his career. Even if they reverse course and keep Bryant, the team needs to bring in some talent across from him to find a true No. 1 receiver for their offense.

Courtland Sutton is probably the best receiver in this draft class. While some will point to Calvin Ridley or D.J. Moore as the top guys, Sutton has the best combination of size and athleticism necessary to become a potential No. 1 receiver.

At the Combine, Sutton put on a nice display. He ran a 4.54 second 40-yard dash and he also had an impressive 3-cone time of 6.57. This performance quelled some concerns about his overall athleticism, and it helped his cause that he was successful in the on-field drills as well.

In addition to his nice performance on-field, Sutton has a strong 6-foot-4 frame and a proven track record of success at SMU. He has recorded at least 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns in each of the past two seasons, so there’s no doubt that he can be consistent. He has the upside to be a No. 1 receiver, and Dak Prescott would certainly welcome that.

Sutton is the most sensible option with this pick. The other positions of need for the Cowboys aren’t as strong at this point. Sutton seems likely to be the first receiver off the board, and he will probably be a top 25 pick. He’s done well enough in draft season to warrant that type of grade.
