The Washington Redskins are scouring the whole North American content for NFL talent this offseason. They are at the University of Calgary today to scout a couple of the Dinos.

Every year in the NFL Draft, there tends to be a couple of prospects from north of the United States border who make a push to get drafted. Recently, players such as Akiem Hicks and Laurent Duvernay-Tardiff have played at Canadian universities and they have developed into starting caliber players. That has paved the way for a lot of other Canada-based players to get a chance to work out for NFL teams.

This year, the Redskins are taking a look at some prospects at the University of Calgary pro day. A couple of offensive linemen, Ryan Sceviour and Darius Ciraco, are set to work out and the Redskins will take a look at them.

The news of the Redskins attendance at the Dinos Pro Day was reported by 3DownNation’s Justin Dunk, who said the following of Sceviour and Ciraco’s abilities on the field.

"Sceviour was an All-Canadian selection last season while continuing to bring his physical brand of play to the field. Ciraco is versatile having started games at centre, guard and tackle during his university career. Both prospects were invited to the CFL combine in Winnipeg from March 23-25. The pro day is an opportunity for Sceviour and Ciraco to better their testing numbers. Sceviour put up 22 reps on the bench press, ran a 5.61 40-yard dash, 4.75 short shuttle, 8.24 three-cone, 23.5-inch vertical leap, seven foot and eight-and-a-half inch broad jump. Ciraco 18 reps of 225 pounds, 5.59 40-yard time, 4.87 short shuttle, 8.54 three-cone, 25.5-inch vertical, eight foot and three-and-a-half inch broad."

Compared to the participants at the NFL Combine, those numbers aren’t particularly good, as both 40-yard dashes would rank close to the bottom of the participants, and the three-cone times would have ranked as the third worst and worst of the linemen group. So, on athleticism alone, these two prospects aren’t particularly promising.

That said, both Sceviour and Ciraco appear to have some strength on their 6-foot-4 frames, so that could benefit both of them. Perhaps getting them into an NFL strength and conditioning program could do a lot to turn them into functional NFL players. Neither profiles as an NFL starter, but because of their experience, Sceviour’s physical talent, and Ciraco’s versatility, either could become a practice squad caliber player and developmental project.

At the end of the day, neither of these players is likely to warrant a draft pick. But, the fact that the Redskins are checking them out to see if either might be worth a shot as an undrafted free agent is an encouraging development. Considering the big need the team has at left guard at the moment, any workouts with offensive linemen are good news.

Perhaps the Redskins will find a diamond in the rough. And in the worst case scenario, they just spend the day in Calgary.
