NFL Mock Draft 7.0: Round 1 of the 2018 NFL Draft
By Ian Cummings
The Miami Dolphins engineered a necessary divorce with Ndamukong Suh earlier this week, ultimately creating a looming void on the defensive interior. The rest of the line is set, with players like Robert Quinn and Cameron Wake manning the edges. All the Dolphins need to solidify their situation in the trenches is a quality defensive tackle.
In terms of quality, there is no one better in the NFL Draft than Maurice Hurst. Hurst is a bit undersized at 6-foot-2, 280, but he plays with an innate quickness that not many offensive linemen can match.
Hurst, hailing from the University of Michigan, used his quick twitch and strength to dominate the competition in Big Ten play. In three years as a full-time starter with the Wolverines, he accumulated 31.0 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks, three pass deflections, and two forced fumbles, earning consensus All-American honors after the 2017 season.
NFL Draft: Three prospects who could slip due to a quarterback run
Hurst does have a heart issue that was rediscovered during NFL Combine health testing, but he’s played with it his entire career at Michigan, with little to no consequence. If he checks out, then Hurst’s draft stock shouldn’t suffer all too much. And with a clear and present need at his position, picking Hurst makes too much sense for the Miami Dolphins.
