9. player. 42. . Linebacker. Georgia. Roquan Smith

With the uncertainty surrounding Reuben Foster, as well as the relative lack of depth in the San Francisco 49ers linebacking core, the addition of Roquan Smith through the NFL Draft makes more and more sense each day.

Smith was a stout defender for the Georgia Bulldogs in 2017, using his combination of speed, strength, and instincts to make a case for himself as a possible top ten pick in the NFL Draft. In this NFL Draft mock, that’s where he goes, and per our own Jacob Camenker, it’s easy to see why.

"When watching Smith play, it’s easy to see what NFL scouts and decision makers like about him. Smith is a highly instinctive player with a quick first step who always seems to be around the ball. He always seemed to be involved in every play during Georgia’s run in the College Football Playoffs, and he was a defensive leader for them as well."

Based on what happens with Foster, the 49ers might need a new field general on defense, and Roquan Smith is arguably the most polished linebacker in this class. He leaves some room to be desired, in terms of size. But he’s a plug-and-play starter who can help provide some insurance for a young team that needs it.
