Washington Redskins will host Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie on visit
By Ian Cummings
The Washington Redskins have a looming need at cornerback. Might a former rival help them address that hole?
The Washington Redskins have been busy up to this point. Yesterday, they hosted Muhammad Wilkerson in D.C., and today, former Cowboys defensive end Benson Mayowa is scheduled to meet with team officials. Now, per J.P. Finlay of NBC Sports, they have scheduled another meeting, this time with former Giants cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.
Cromartie, set to turn 32 years old in less than a month, is an intriguing option, if the Washington Redskins can get him cheap. The Washington Redskins are certainly familiar with his style of play. Since 2014, they’ve played Cromartie twice a year. Perhaps the most infamous Washington Redskins play of the last three years was incited by Cromartie. In the season finale of 2016, it was Cromartie who nabbed the game-winning interception off of a scrambling Kirk Cousins. It was Cromartie’s sixth of the season.
The 2017 season didn’t bring as much success for Cromartie. He only started six games, logging 48 total tackles, one pass deflection, and half of a sack. A suspension invoked by the New York Giants and then-head coach Ben McAdoo helped hinder Rodgers-Cromartie’s production, but the veteran still managed to post a respectable 77.2 rating, per Pro Football Focus.
Rodgers-Cromarite would provide the Washington Redskins with some depth, and playmaking ability, if he hasn’t yet begun the inevitable decline of a cornerback over 30 years old. He also offers recent experience in the slot. But nevertheless, the Washington Redskins should avoid overpaying just to keep him.
After a down year in 2017, both on and off the field, combined with his listed age, Rodgers-Cromartie may not have a lot of interest, allowing the Redskins to pounce. But nonetheless, paying too much for an overaged cornerback could come back to haunt the team. They have recent experience with such a thing.
