The Washington Redskins have begun looking for pieces to help bolster their defensive line.

Free agency does not start until March 14, but the Washington Redskins are doing their homework ahead of time, as they should. Reports say they will host former New York Jets defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson to a visit, once he has completed his current visit with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Wilkerson, set to turn 29 years old later this year, is an intriguing option in free agency for the Washington Redskins. He was originally believed to be headed to the Green Bay Packers, but the veteran instead opted to visit other teams before making a decision.

Wilkerson, 6-foot-4, 315, has the size to be a difference maker on a rotational basis for the Washington Redskins. A former first-round pick, he also has the physical tools to use his size effectively.

But while Wilkerson has the makeup of a Pro Bowl player, he has only accomplished such a feat once, back in 2015, when he accrued 12.0 sacks and three forced fumbles. Despite that, Wilkerson’s production is impressive for an interior defensive lineman. He’s logged five sacks or above on four separate occasions in his seven-year career. Wilkerson put up decent numbers last season, nabbing 3.5 sacks in thirteen games on a relatively underwhelming defensive squad in the Big Apple.

While Wilkerson offers much as a player, there have been questions surrounding his effort and mentality over the years. Perhaps, with a larger role in D.C., and a new start, Wilkerson could be reinvigorated, heading into the latter stages of his career. But the Washington Redskins, at the same time, could risk less going for younger options.

The Washington Redskins have a lot of work to do in free agency, regardless of whether Wilkerson likes D.C. enough to stay. The team lacks depth at many key positions, and several primary needs continue to glare, including the need for a No. 1 running back, wide receivers, and a starting linebacker opposite Mason Foster.
