The Washington Redskins are trying to move their former second rounder Su’a Cravens. Reportedly, the Denver Broncos are interested in acquiring him.

The marriage between Su’a Cravens and the Washington Redskins has been a rocky one. After a very strong rookie year by the then linebacker, Cravens was expected to move to safety for the 2017 season and be a key starter. Instead, he abruptly left the team before the season as he contemplated retirement. He would eventually be placed on a reserve list and miss the season.

However, at one point, Cravens had wanted to return, but the Redskins instead elected to deactivate him. That caused both sides to lose faith in one another and as a result, Cravens returning to Washington was a long shot. Though he wants to play, it likely won’t be in the nation’s capital.

For this reason, the Redskins have been reportedly trying to trade Cravens. And according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, a top suitor has emerged for the former USC product.

This makes a lot of sense. The Broncos run a 3-4 defense, and they could end up utilizing Cravens in a hybrid linebacker/safety role as the Redskins were going to this season. He could start as wherever the team needs him, and he could eventually be the long term starter next to former third round safety Jonathan Simmons. That would be ideal for the Broncos.

Also, given that Todd Davis is going to be a free agent, it’s possible that the team could move Cravens back into a coverage linebacker role in sub packages while playing a two-down starter in the middle of the defense. That flexibility would be huge for Vance Joseph’s defense.

As for what the Redskins are going to be able to get for Cravens, that remains to be seen. They could probably get some sort of mid-round pick from Cravens but given the saga he went through last year, it’s unlikely they will recoup anything close to the second round pick they spent on him. A fourth round pick would probably be the ceiling for what they could get.

However, say the Redskins took on one of the contracts that the Broncos are looking to get rid of, like Emmanuel Sanders or Aqib Talib, they could possibly get a third round pick in the deal. Getting Sanders and a third or fourth rounder would give the team a solid No. 2 receiver and replace the third round pick they lost in the Alex Smith deal. So, perhaps that type of move could work well.
