NFL Mock Draft 5.0: Could Saquon Barkley fall to the Redskins at No. 13?
By Ian Cummings
The Miami Dolphins, not confident with the progress and future prospects of Ryan Tannehill’s career, decide to trade up and ensure their acquisition of the biggest arm in this year’s draft: Josh Allen of Wyoming University.
Allen, 6-foot-5, 233, fits the mold of the Adam Gase quarterback. Gase, widely heralded as a quarterback whisperer, has a wealth of knowledge to teach Allen, and perhaps a change of pace could bode well for Miami, a team that’s been the doormat of the AFC East for years now.
In the trade to the No. 9 pick in the NFL Draft, the Dolphins are forced to ship off their No. 11 pick, their No. 42 pick, and an additional fourth-rounder in 2017. The price may seem high, but it’s the price the Dolphins will have to pay. Several teams will be calling if a talented quarterback drops this far, and to beat out other interested teams, like the Cardinals, Chargers, and Steelers, the Dolphins will have to pay a bit more. Their earlier pick in the NFL Draft gives them more leverage, and so the 49ers, who need such a pick, comply.
Allen will get a chance to start immediately in Miami, but his lack of a strong supporting cast is a cause for concern. There is no quality starting running back on the Dolphins, and their receiving core is seriously lacking. With Jarvis Landry on the trade block, the talent there will only decrease.
Nevertheless, the Dolphins have a chance to grab a quarterback with upside, and with Adam Gase on the case, that potential could be easily unlocked.
