The Kansas City Chiefs recently traded All-Pro Marcus Peters to Sean McVay’s Los Angeles Rams, affirming their confidence in former Washington Redskins cornerback Kendall Fuller.

Remember when the Washington Redskins traded a rising star defensive back to the Chiefs, receiving questionable compensation in return?

Ha.

Earlier today, the Kansas City Chiefs jettisoned Marcus Peters, who’s caught 19 interceptions since entering the league in 2015, to the Los Angeles Rams. Peters will head home, to the Los Angeles area, where he grew up, and the Kansas City Chiefs will presumably get a package of draft picks in exchange for their best defensive player.

The move, like the Washington Redskins’ trade of Kendall Fuller, was met with swift criticism from Chiefs fans, and rightfully so. The team’s defensive backfield was shaping up to be a competent unit after a disappointing year, but now, with one valuable piece gone, they’re back to square one.

The move ensures that the Kansas City Chiefs have the utmost confidence in Kendall Fuller, as did the Washington Redskins when they ultimately decided to trade him away in January. Fuller, coming off a career year in which he nabbed four interceptions and ten pass deflections, will likely be asked to relinquish his duties as slot cornerback, in order to assume a role on the outside.

The Kansas City Chiefs already have a slot cornerback in Steven Nelson, and with Nelson, Fuller joins a secondary recently expunged of all talent, with Peters moving on to Los Angeles and washed-up veteran Darrelle Revis being released.

For Washington Redskins fans, the assumed promotion of Fuller will leave a bittersweet taste behind. Fuller was set to become a key piece of the Washington Redskins’ defense, if he wasn’t already. Now, he’ll be relied on to provide top-notch play somewhere else. And we know he will.
