Former Washington Redskins DL Chris Baker released by Buccaneers

Former Washington Redskins defensive lineman Chris Baker has been released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after just one year with the team.
The Washington Redskins were met with swift criticism when they opted to let go standout defensive lineman Chris “Swaggy” Baker in the offseason of 2017. Now, that move doesn’t look so bad. Baker has reportedly been released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, just one year into a three-year contract.

In 2017, Chris Baker signed a three-year deal worth $15.75 million with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. By many, he was considered a high-priority free agent for the Washington Redskins, due to their pressing need on the defensive line.
In the end, however, Baker would go south, and so too would his performance. After accruing 9.5 sacks in his final two seasons in the nation’s capital, Baker only logged half a sack in fifteen games with the Buccaneers.

Baker’s time with the Buccaneers helps bring to light some of the issues that caused the Redskins to be hesitant toward the notion of re-signing him. There were repeated concerns surrounding his drive and work ethic, and in a Tampa Bay Times article by Rick Stroud and Greg Auman, players are described as being frustrated with Baker for his happy disposition in the face of a disappointing loss.
The Washington Redskins seemed to have jumped ship on Baker at the appropriate time. He wasn’t anywhere close to his best form in Tampa Bay. While in Washington, he stood out as a space-eating run defender. With the Buccaneers, however, he was largely ineffective, and the concerns about his attitude were prevalent.
Some would say that re-signing Baker would be a good move for the Washington Redskins. After his incredibly disappointing season, he’ll likely come cheap, and the Washington Redskins do need a little more depth on the defensive line.

But ultimately, bringing in a washed-up veteran with concerns surrounding his drive is the last thing Washington needs. Baker’s time with the Washington Redskins has been done, and the team needs to survey other options in free agency, or the draft. There are plenty that offer more than what 31-year old Chris Baker brings to the table.
