Now that the shock of the Washington Redskins’ trade for Alex Smith has died down, many people are actually excited to see the quarterback play in D.C. Including the quarterback himself.

Per Kyle Tasman of 247 Sports, Alex Smith recently spoke about his move to the nation’s capital on a San Francisco-based radio station. When asked about his thoughts on his change of scenery, here’s what he had to say:

"I’m jacked. I’m really excited. Once I found out that things in Kansas City were going in a different direction, I was pumped at the opportunity and when Washington came calling I was hopeful that was a possible destination and I’m just jacked that it worked out and that they wanted me because the feelings were mutual and I’m looking forward to it."

It’s easy to see why Smith would be happy to come play quarterback for the Washington Redskins. The team has a stellar track record as a playoff team in recent years. They’re known to treat their quarterbacks with respect, and they have all the weapons in place for Smith to succeed, with a proven general manager to give him more options.

Wait a minute…

Should somebody tell him?

No, nobody tell him.

Okay, so maybe D.C. isn’t the most desirable destination for a veteran quarterback looking for one last opportunity to achieve the highest NFL accomplishment late in his professional career. But it’s far from the worst place.

In Washington, Smith has a young offense with weapons that, when healthy, can bring an explosive verve to the unit. His offensive line is very good, and just one piece away from being dominant. The defense has a stable, young core, and with a few re-signings and a few new acquisitions come springtime, the unit could be far better and far deeper than it was last year.

For Smith, coming to D.C. means that he is the man, for at least a couple years. He didn’t have that privilege in Kansas City, with Patrick Mahomes breathing down his throat. In Washington, Smith has one last chance to build on his legacy. He’s never been in a perfect situation. Washington is far from that. But perhaps, to be depended on is all he needs.

In a time where Kirk Cousins was hesitant to sign long-term with the Washington Redskins, and Robert Griffin III was jumping with joy when given the chance to leave, Smith’s enthusiasm is a refreshing change. Hopefully, the veteran quarterback will get a warm welcome, and be put in a favorable situation by the front office. He deserves it.
