Report: Redskins will be interested in Bennie Logan on free agent market
The Washington Redskins have a need at the nose tackle position. Bennie Logan will certainly draw some interest when he hits the free agent market.
Since Terrance Knighton left the Redskins after one season in 2015, the team has had a massive hole at the nose tackle position. The duo of Kedric Golston and Ziggy Hood hasn’t gotten the job done over the course of the past few seasons. Hood’s true position is end, and he could be moved back there during the 2018 offseason. But if that happens, the Redskins will have to find a replacement for him.
In the 2017 offseason, the team did bring in former first round pick Phil Taylor to play the position. Taylor looked good during training camp, especially since he had signed a reserve/futures deal after being injury prone for several seasons. He was projected to start before he suffered a quad contusion in the preseason. Taylor still could be a solid starter, but he’s a free agent and the team may not bring him back in the offseason. It’s a possibility, but it’s far from a certainty.
Because of all these factors, the Redskins are going to have to look for a nose tackle in either free agency or the draft. In the draft, the team could target a first round option, and they have showed interest in Alabama’s Da’Ron Payne. That said, they also could look for an option on the free agent market as well.

NBC Sports Washington’s Rich Tandler recently pointed out that Bennie Logan could be an option for the team. Here’s what he said about Logan in the piece.
"Bennie Logan, who was a target of the Redskins last year before he signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs, will be on the market and presumably, he will draw the interest of Washington."

Both of these are logical conclusions. As Tandler mentioned, the Redskins were interested in Logan last offseason, but the elected to use their resources elsewhere. This time around, they may focus their attention on Logan, who is coming off a decent season with the Chiefs, to serve as a functional starter. Logan isn’t the strongest tackle on the open market, as he isn’t much of a pass rusher, but the two down presence he could offer would be a major upgrade for the Redskins in the middle of their defense.
Logan could play in base packages and in obvious run situations, but he could make way for other players in pass rushing situations. They could rotate a different player in for pass rushing sets, and that could end up being the aforementioned Hood. So, Logan would be a good fit with the team.
It’s hard to peg an actual market value for Logan. He signed a one-year deal for $8 million last offseason, but he probably won’t make as much yearly in a long term deal. Ideally, the team could ink him to a three year deal worth $6 million annually. That would make him the second highest paid 3-4 nose tackle in the league, so that seems like a fair assessment of what he is worth.

It will be interesting to see whether or not the Redskins end up going after Logan. They need to get a player for the middle of their defense, and if they don’t get Logan, they will have to focus on getting a starter at the position in the draft.
