Everyone has an opinion when it comes to the Washington Redskins and their situation with Kirk Cousins. But Scot McCloughan’s carries more weight than most.

The former general manager of the Washington Redskins was met with a rather unpleasant ouster in the offseason of 2017, but since then, he’s remained an active supporter of the Washington Redskins, and he’s been a regular guest on various media outlets, providing a talent evaluator’s perspective on situations all across the league. Time and time again, he’s been asked a familiar question. How good is Kirk Cousins?

One would think that Cousins has provided more than enough evidence in three years as the Washington Redskins’ starter. Over that time, he’s compiled 81 touchdowns to 36 interceptions, and he’s thrown for over 13,000 total yards. Even in 2017, when the offense was missing countless key players, it still had life, largely due to Kirk Cousins’ presence under center. But despite the resume, teams still aren’t sold. The question looms. How good is he?

Talent evaluators with jobs at the moment will also be looking to answer that question this offseason. Teams like Denver, Buffalo, and Cleveland should all have a sizable interest in the quarterback, and recently, McCloughan sat down with Denver’s 103.4 The Fan Pritchard and Cecil radio show to talk about the Redskins’ quarterback. Here’s what he had to say, per Chad Jensen of Mile High Huddle:

"“I might not have been around [Cousins] long enough in terms of years, from the standpoint I was around Brett Favre, Russell Wilson, Matt Hasselbeck, Alex Smith. He’s a good player. Is he special? I don’t see special. But also, we were still building a roster around him to make him special."

I’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that McCloughan is the same guy who saw special in Matt Jones and Preston Smith. Additionally, Josh Doctson is still pending. Even talent evaluators miss the target sometimes, and despite his many misses, McCloughan’s experience and knowledge as a talent evaluator holds weight.

McCloughan doesn’t see special in Cousins. Is he right? Time will tell, but for now, there are more than enough opinions swirling around to suffice for what is yet to be known. McCloughan added one more to the hat. But it doesn’t matter. The situation is in the hands of the Washington Redskins. Nothing is set in stone yet, and as far as answers go, there is nothing to do but wait.
