The Washington Redskins added an offensive lineman to the roster. They inked Orlando Franklin to a reserve/future deal on Friday.

During the 2017 season, the Washington Redskins cycled through offensive linemen like crazy. At one point, they had so many injured players at the position that they carried 12 on their 53-man roster. That’s a ridiculous percentage of the roster being dedicated to a single position.

Among the 12 players that were on the roster at that time was Orlando Franklin. The former San Diego Charger had been on the market up until that point, and the versatility of Franklin made him an attractive target. However, Franklin only saw action in one game before he was cut again by the team. He would end the season on the free agent market having seen just one snap for the team.

However, the Redskins must have liked what they saw out of Franklin. According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the team signed Franklin to a reserve/future contract on Friday afternoon. Franklin will be on the team’s active roster this offseason, and that is a good get for the Redskins.

Franklin was once a quality starting offensive lineman for both the Chargers and the Broncos. However, injuries sapped him of his effectiveness and that caused him to be ignored on the market. He’s not worthy of a starting position anymore, but his versatility could make him a quality backup for a contending team.

The only major concern with Franklin is his age. He turned 30 in December, so it’s probable that his best days are behind him. Still, the veteran has 89 starts during his career and he was a part of some of the contenders that the Broncos sent deep into the playoffs. For that reason, he will have a chance to win a spot on the active roster, especially considering that the team has no true backup at guard.

Franklin is a veteran with experience. His upside is capped, but the steady presence he could provide the team, if healthy, cannot be denied. Adding him is a low-risk move, so the Redskins deserve credit for bringing him to the team once again.
