The Washington Redskins dealt with a lot of injuries during the 2017 season. Morgan Moses never missed a game, but he ended up needing surgery after the season.

Morgan Moses had an impressive season for the Washington Redskins. He was the only member of the offensive line to start all 16 games, and he generally played well on the right side. Though he did struggle in the opening couple games of the season, his play picked up before injuries took their toll. Still, he put up a solid performance and demonstrated excellent toughness during the season.

With Trent Williams and Moses at the tackle positions, it looks like the Redskins have a tackle duo who should start for them for the next five years. That said, they need to be fully healthy during the 2018 regular season to get this started on the right foot. Williams recently had surgery to repair a balky knee that had caused him trouble during the 2017 season.

According to ESPN’s John Keim, Moses is have surgery on Thursday to fix the ankle injury that has been bothering him. Keim confirmed this on Twitter, but also mentioned that Moses managed to avoid needing double ankle surgery. Moses is getting it on one ankle and the recovery time is currently unknown, but will be clear after surgery. Regardless, this is a good move by Moses and he should hopefully be healthy by the start of training camp.

In 2018, the Redskins are going to need Moses. He is their third best lineman, but he definitely seems to be an above average right tackle by the NFL standards. Moses provides excellent outside protection for Kirk Cousins, and the team will need that to continue, especially if the team lets Cousins walk in the offseason. If the potential new quarterback isn’t as mobile as Cousins, then Moses will need to be at his best, so he will need to be healthy for that to happen.

Getting surgery now carries little risk. Barring a long recovery time, the Redskins will have Moses back by the start of the 2018 season no matter what. And if he and Williams are both at full strength to start the season, then the team will be in much better shape than they were during 2017 on the offensive line.

Update: Keim tweeted an update clarifying that the surgery would take place on Thursday. It had first been reported that the surgery would be on Wednesday.
