Previewing the Redskins Week 17 matchup with the New York Giants
Redskins defense vs. Giants offense
It’s unclear what the Giants plan on offense is for this contest. One would expect that the Giants would start Eli Manning for the game to avoid fan backlash after breaking his 210 start streak. However, the team is planning on making Davis Webb, a third round rookie, active for the first time, so there’s a good chance that he could see some action in the game to see what he’s capable of doing.
No matter which quarterback plays, the Redskins are going to have a chance to shut down their receiving weapons. The key to the Giants offense is tight end Evan Engram. Currently, he is dealing with a rib injury and he may not play on Sunday. Also, Sterling Shepard is a bit banged up. If that duo can’t play, then the Giants will have to rely on Roger Lewis, Rhett Ellison, and Tavares King to carry their offense. That will not go well, and the Redskins corners will have a field day blanketing them.
Further complicating matters for the Giants is their complete lack of talent on the offensive line. Their offensive tackles haven’t performed well this season, and Ereck Flowers and Chad Wheeler will probably be challenged by Ryan Kerrigan and Junior Galette, who has come on in recent weeks.

Last time the two teams played, Kerrigan had two sacks and he will look to repeat that performance. If he gets three sacks, he will set a single season his, breaking his total of 13.5 in 2014. It’s a lofty goal, but it’s still within reach. If the Redskins can get pressure on the quarterback, that will make it even harder to complete passes. It’s possible that the Giants will once again be held to minimal passing yardage which would make Greg Manusky very happy.
In the ground game, the Giants have been more heavily relying on Wayne Gallman in recent weeks, and he has flashed above average ability. With Ziggy Hood set to miss this contest, A.J. Francis will probably take over as the primary nose guy. That will give Gallman at least a chance to succeed, and he may be tasked with carrying the offense on Sunday. That would be a disaster if it actually happens.
At the end of the day, it’s going to be very hard for the Giants to score. They don’t have much offensive weaponry and they couldn’t do much against the Redskins on Thanksgiving. There’s no reason that should change later in the season.
