The defensive line has been inconsistent for the Redskins this season. However, they only have a couple of free agents and they haven’t played much.

Prior to the 2017 offseason, the defensive line was considered to be a major need for the Washington Redskins. They had one of the worst run defenses in 2016 and part of that was due to the weakness of their three-man front. The addition of Jonathan Allen helped to strengthen the unit while Terrell McClain and Stacy McGee were also added to bolster the line. The latter two acquisitions haven’t worked out as smoothly.

McClain and McGee were brought in to be run stuffers, but neither has been particularly impactful. McGee has been solid against the run while McClain predictably hasn’t fared well in the Redskins 3-4 defense. He’s more of a natural fit in a 4-3 defense, so his signing was questionable at best. However, due to the contracts the duo signed, it would be hard to get rid of either before the 2019 offseason.

Because of the long term commitments on the defensive line contractually and the amount of young players they also have, there aren’t many free agents on the unit. In fact, there are only two. And the duo isn’t even on the active roster right now. They are a couple of veterans who have languished on the Injured Reserve for most of their time with the team. Still, they could provide some value, so here’s a look at what the Redskins might do with them.
