Despite these criticisms, Gruden is far from gone

While there is a lot of blame to place on Gruden for the performance of the offense this season, it’s still not entirely his fault. The team has dealt with so many injuries that it’s been hard to keep track of. They have 15 players on Injured Reserve and many others on the active roster who have been out for extended periods of time. There was nothing that Gruden could do about this as he had no control over these.

It’s also worth noting that there are still four games left in the season. A strong finish is still possible and while the Redskins are almost certain to miss the playoffs, they could still finish with an 8-8 record and that would do a lot to helping Gruden stick around. He has put together back to back winning seasons before this, and he signed an extension in the offseason, so that could end up buying him some extra time moving forward.

And of course, it’s worth noting that the Redskins did face the toughest schedule in the NFL for the first 11 weeks of the season. Going 5-6 in that stretch may not look like a lot, but it actually was a pretty impressive feat for the banged up team. So that should get him some slack, and again, a good finish to the year should save his job for another season.

As Black Monday draws nearer, more will be known about the status of Gruden. Right now, Gruden is on the hot seat in the final month of the season. He deserves a lot of criticism, but for now, he’s still the team’s coach. And he’ll get a chance to prove himself in the final four games.
