Jay Gruden has been the head coach of the Washington Redskins for four seasons. Given their performance this year, it may be time to consider moving on from him.

Thursday night’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys was an absolutely crushing one for the Redskins. With their playoff hopes on the line, they traveled to Dallas to face a struggling Cowboys offense. They were expected to win, but by the end of the night, Dallas had destroyed them by a final score of 38-14. It was an embarrassing performance for Washington, and a good chunk of the blame should fall on the coaching.

The Redskins had a lot of issues in the game, but they are issues that have been taking place for the entire course of the season. Now sitting at 5-7, the team is going to enter a crucial, month-long stretch that will likely decide the future of their head coach, Jay Gruden.

The Thursday night loss firmly put Gruden on the hot seat. For the third time in his four years as head coach, the Redskins appear to be ready to miss the playoffs given the tough race in the NFC this year. A 9-7 team is unlikely to make it in this year, and the Redskins would have to win their final four contests to even reach that mark. So now, Gruden will be fighting to keep his job for another season, which is very possible. But at the same time, the Redskins have to be considering moving on if this season doesn’t end with a hot stretch.

The fact is that Gruden deserves a lot of blame for what the team hasn’t been able to accomplish this year. It’s not entirely his fault by any stretch of the imagination, but the Redskins have to be at least considering moving on from him this offseason. Here’s why.
