Redskins Breakdown: Balanced offense, fierce defense take down Giants
Receiving Game: Jamison Crowder explodes for huge day
Washington really needed a receiver to step up and find space against the Giants solid secondary. New York was coming off their best game of the season, and the stellar secondary had looked rejuvenated against the Chiefs. The Redskins knew they needed to get a performance, but who would it come from.
Many expected that Josh Doctson would have a big game. He scored a touchdown, but it he wasn’t the top guy. It was Jamison Crowder.
Crowder, Cousins’ top target, caught seven passes for a hopping 141 yards and a touchdown. Throughout the evening, Cousins targeted the 5-foot-9 receiver over the middle of the field. Crowder consistently was able to break into open space and generated a lot of yards after the catch. He showed up at exactly the right time and Washington has to be psyched about how he played.
One of Crowder’s best catches came early in the game. On a ball slightly behind him, Crowder reached out and made a one handed grab to secure the pass. That gave the Redskins their first, first down and that really seemed to get Crowder going.
Crowder’s role was bound to increase with Chris Thompson out. He played more of a role on screen attempts than he has in the past, though Cousins couldn’t complete either pass, and it looks like he is the No. 1 target in the receiving corps right now. If he keeps playing well, that will open up opportunities for Doctson moving forward and that would be huge for the team.
