Defense came up big in the Redskins’ game tonight, holding the Giants to under 25 total yards through most of the second half.

It wasn’t a very glamorous showing for the Redskins on Thanksgiving, but the Redskins found a way to get it done. They only scored three points in the first half, but in the second, they made some adjustments and got the offense moving. Kirk Cousins finished the game with 242 yards and 2 touchdowns, Samaje Perine ran for 24 carries for 100 yards, and Jamison Crowder went off, logging 7 receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown.

But as well as the offense played in the second half, the defense deserves the turkey legs after this one. For almost the full sixty minutes, Eli Manning had less than 100 yards through the air, and when his unit tried to move the ball in the final minutes, Kendall Fuller stopped them with an incredible interception to end the game.

The secondary was very solid today, and the pass rush was just as good, if not better. Junior Galette and Anthony Lanier both got to the quarterback at least once, and Ryan Kerrigan led the way with two sacks in the first half. Greg Manusky used his aggressive style to take advantage of a weakened Giants’ offensive line. And it worked.

5-6 looks a lot better than 4-7, or even 4-6. And now, the Redskins are only one game out of the wild card spot. Two losses today by the Lions and the Cowboys give them an even better shot at getting back into the race. One week ago, a playoff run felt impossible, but now, it’s very realistic. Hopefully, the Redskins can use two long weeks to get healthy. Next week, they have a crucial matchup against the Cowboys, but after that, every game is easily winnable. Do you believe in miracles? Because it’s not out of the question.

Next: Redskins end half at 3-3, struggle to move ball

The Redskins rebounded from a weak first half and dominated in the third and fourth quarters. The defense held their end of the bargain, and Samaje Perine ran with energy on the offensive side of the ball, setting up an attack more well-balanced than a hearty bowl of Cheerios. In the coming weeks, the Redskins need to cherish this equation for success. Because it could be the difference between 10-6 and 9-7.
