Chris Thompson suffered a bad injury in the Redskins loss to the Saints in Week 11. According to sources, he broke his fibula and will miss the rest of the season.

Crushing. That is the only way to describe the Redskins loss to the Saints on Sunday. Despite having a 15 point lead late in the fourth quarter, the team blew the lead and saw the Saints kick a game winning field goal in overtime. As if that wasn’t enough, the team also lost one of their best offensive players for the season.

According to Jay Gruden and the Washington Redskins Twitter, Chris Thompson suffered a broken fibula against the Saints. On the play where he was injured, he got rolled up on by a New Orleans players and he bent awkwardly. Thompson had to be carted off, and at the time, there was a lot of concern about the injury. And the concern was definitely legitimate.

Thompson is going to get surgery on his leg and that will keep him sidelined for the rest of the season. This is devastating news for both Thompson and the Redskins. Thompson has been the lifeblood of the Redskins offense and he was really coming into his own. He took to Twitter after the game to talk about his injury and road to recovery.

This just heartbreaking to see, especially because Thompson has been a great leader. He plays harder than any player on the team and is generally liked by coaches, fans, and teammates alike.

The Redskins will certainly miss his presence. Thompson was one of their most explosive and consistent playmakers. Since the start of the season, they have relied on him to be the top pass catcher and he really allowed Kirk Cousins time to get chemistry with his other receivers. Thompson stepped into a role than nobody thought would suit him, a lead back, and he did well.

Without Thompson, Washington is going to have to heavily rely on Samaje Perine to carry the team. Perine had a terrific performance against the Saints, totaling 117 yards a score on 23 carries, but he isn’t the same pass catcher as Thompson, as evidenced by his drop in overtime. Also, the only back left on the roster aside from Perine is Byron Marshall. Rob Kelley is out for the season and Mack Brown joined the Vikings after being waived. Thus, depth will be a problem for the team.

Overall, this is a huge loss for the Redskins. They could ill afford to lose another runner, but they did. And it happened to be their most versatile offensive player. Thompson will be back in 2018, but the team will certainly miss him as they complete what looks like a wasted 2017 campaign.
