The New England Patriots traded Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a second round pick. This will have an impact on the Kirk Cousins, Washington Redskins saga.

Over the course of the past couple offseasons, the Redskins have been trying to figure out what to do with Kirk Cousins. The two sides have been unable to agree on long term extensions, and in both years, Cousins has been content to gamble on himself while playing with the franchise tag. A third straight franchise tag is a possibility this offseason, but it seems more likely that Cousins will hit the open market.

Many expected that if Cousins was to hit the market, he would end up being courted heavily by the San Francisco 49ers. Cousins’ former offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, is the head coach there and many thought he would have interest in reuniting with Cousins. After all, the 49ers had a massive need at quarterback and a lot of cap space, so a deal would make sense.

Well, that won’t be happening after all. The 49ers opted to make a trade with the Patriots to get backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to be their new starter. They surrendered a second round pick that will likely be No. 33 or No. 34 overall, making it a valuable asset. Garoppolo will be the starter henceforth which means that Cousins is no longer in the mix for the team.

So now, Cousins has lost a point of leverage for negotiations. There’s one less team on the market who might be interested in his services. However, there are still going to be a lot of teams out there that are willing to pay a lot for Cousins, so the market has definitely not dried up. Cousins is still in line to get a big contract after this season, and it will be interesting to see if the team will be willing to pay for him.

With all that said, the team is going to have to compete with a number of teams for their star quarterback. Here’s a look at the top five suitors for Cousins should he hit the market this offseason.
