player. 48. . Defensive Line. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Chris Baker. 2

I can’t take credit for this trade idea, but I think it’s a brilliant one. Ken Meringolo or Hog’s Haven is the one who came up with this potential deal, and it makes perfect sense.

The Redskins defensive line has gotten thinner as the season has gone along. They lost Jonathan Allen and Matt Ioannidis over the course of the past couple weeks, and they don’t have the personnel available to replace them. The team could use another lineman on the front to help plug in some holes. That’s where Baker would come in.

In his piece about the potential of the Redskins acquiring Baker, Meringolo said the following of the deal.

More from Riggo's Rag

"The Redskins are missing not just Jonathan Allen on the defensive line, but also Phil Taylor, who has been largely forgotten because of the stellar play of Matt Ioannidis. To me, if there was a way to bolster this group at the trade deadline, I would be interested. Down in Tampa Bay, I am told there is an unhappy defensive lineman by the name of Chris Baker. He recently echoed the displeasure of his teammate T.J. Ward over a lack of playing time. His contract, while technically a three-year deal, is easily maneuvered out of after this season with ZERO cap hit. Perhaps Baker could swaggily re-enter the Washington locker room and contribute some beefy minutes at the front of our defense."

That contract clause is also a huge part of this trade possibility. In the event that Allen, Ioannidis, and Taylor all returned in 2018, the Redskins wouldn’t have a need for Baker. They could still opt to keep him, but with a lot of money tied up in Terrell McClain and Stacy McGee. For that reason, Baker would be a rental, but he could be worth it just to get some more depth and leadership back in Washington.

This trade is a highly unlikely one, but bringing back Baker would be a good story for the team. He was a very strong player who many were sad to see go in the offseason.
