3. Martrell Spaight must fill in well for Mason Foster

One of the biggest losses that Washington suffered this week was that of Mason Foster. The second starting middle linebacker for the team was dealing with a shoulder injury that turned out to be a torn labrum. He had to get surgery on the injury, and the Redskins placed him on Injured Reserve as a result.

In his stead, the team is likely to start Martrell Spaight next to Zach Brown. Spaight has had an up and down start to his NFL career, but in limited action this year, he has looked good.

In Week 3 against the Raiders, Spaight was forced into action in place of Foster. In the starting role, Spaight ended up being a force in run defense and filled in very well for the veteran. Spaight has nice athleticism and is a pretty physical player. That is very similar to the role that Foster played with the team, so it seems likely that Spaight will be a quality replacement.

Still, the Redskins won’t know until they see Spaight on the field this week. If Spaight struggles, then the team will have to use some sort of combination of Spaight and Will Compton to fill the role. But ideally, Spaight will turn into the new starter and do well for the team.
