Trent Williams has been dealing with a knee injury in recent weeks. According to Williams, he will likely need surgery on it at some point, but he’s looking to wait on it.

One of the toughest members of the Washington Redskins is Trent Williams. The left tackle from Oklahoma is arguably the league’s best blind side blocker, and he has been a huge asset for the team. He excels as a run blocker and is a terrific pass rusher and on top of that, he is also a great leader.

Williams has earned his tough reputation by playing through minor injuries in the past. Currently, he is struggling with a knee injury, but he has been active for the team and started because of an injury to top reserve Ty Nsekhe. Williams knew the Redskins needed him, and he stepped up and toughed it out. For that, the team is grateful.

However, they may need to rethink their strategy in the near future. According to Williams, he is going to need surgery on his knee at some point. He recently said the following in an interview with Liz Clarke of the Washington Post:

More from Riggo's Rag

"The ligament that holds my kneecap in the socket needs to be reconstructed at some point. It’s like a five-, six-month surgery, I think, in recovery time. I’m just trying to hold off on that as long as possible. Hopefully get through the season and revisit it in the offseason."

While this sounds like a tough injury, it appears to be one that Williams will be able to play through. In the past, players have been able to play through knee injuries in order to fight through the ends of seasons. Williams’ injury is probably minor, but the only way to fix the issue is with a more major surgery. He should be able to make it through the season, but the Redskins should use him a bit more carefully.

When Nsekhe returns from injury, the Redskins may want to consider giving Williams a week off at some point. Nsekhe has proven to be a strong starting tackle in the past, so giving Williams one extra week to rest could be beneficial to his long term health. The Redskins would rather have him at the end of the season, so giving him a week off in the Week 9 or 10 could be a smart idea.

Right now, the Redskins just have to focus on making sure that Williams doesn’t overwork himself. Williams is a tough player, and he will do everything he can to play each week. It’s Washington’s job to make sure that he stays healthy, and limit the chances he has to further aggravate his injury.
