Jonathan Allen has been one of the best performers on the Redskins defensive line this season. Now, he will be out 3-to-4 weeks as he deals with a foot injury.

In Sunday’s contest against the San Francisco 49ers, Jonathan Allen went down late in the game with a foot injury. Allen’s injury briefly stopped play and then he went off to the sideline and didn’t return. He had been declared out immediately, but it wasn’t clear whether or not that was due to precautionary reasons or if the injury was serious.

On Monday afternoon, the Redskins confirmed that Allen’s injury would sideline him for a few weeks. Per multiple sources, Allen is going to be out for 3-to-4 weeks due to the foot injury he suffered. Specifically, he sprained his Lisfranc, which is a pretty serious injury. The Redskins are lucky that Allen’s injury isn’t more serious, but they are going to regress with him out of the lineup.

So far during his rookie season, Allen has been one of the best defensive rookies in the NFL. He has notched a single sack, but he has made more of an impact than the numbers indicate. Allen has been able to consistently push into the backfield to open up rushing lanes for his fellow defenders. He has occupied offensive linemen and allowed his linebackers, namely Zach Brown, to break into the backfield and rack up tackles for loss.

Additionally, Allen has led the defensive line in snaps, playing just over 53 percent of the snaps. Jim Tomsula likes to mix and match his defensive line rotations, but Allen has clearly been one of his favored players. Without him in the lineup, the Redskins are going to have to find a replacement among the available players to help absorb some of his work.

In all likelihood, Matt Ioannidis will be in line to see more work and Terrell McClain might also see more work. Ioannidis has been the best interior pass rusher for the Redskins, and he has seen a lot of action in obvious passing situations. He had seen just one less snap than Allen this year, but now he will eat into some of his early down time. That seems to be the most logical option for the Redskins.

Elsewhere, McClain will probably see more snaps because he is a strong run stuffer, but also has minor pass rushing ability. He can see more action across from Ioannidis in pass rush packages or maybe as a nose tackle with Ziggy Hood playing outside. Anthony Lanier also may see a few snaps, as he will now be active on game day for the first time this season.

No matter what, the Redskins are going miss Allen. He has been one of their most impactful defensive linemen, and being without him for a couple weeks is going to be difficult, especially against the Eagles and the Cowboys. Tomsula will have his hands full trying to replace his talented rookie but if anyone can figure out what to do, he is the guy.
