Mason Foster had the game winning interception against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. However, he may not be able to play Week 3 after suffering a shoulder injury.

Mason Foster had a roller coaster performance against the Los Angeles Rams in the Washington Redskins Week 2 victory. After allowing a huge completion to tight end Gerald Everett in the middle of the game, Foster was able to come back and make a game winning interception on the Rams’ final offensive drive of the contest. The Redskins had just taken the lead on a late touchdown drive, and Foster’s play helped seal their first win of 2017.

More impressive, Foster did this despite the fact that he had suffered a shoulder injury. Foster reportedly suffered shoulder injury, but he had just been listed as day-to-day after the game. Many assumed that he would be ready to go for Sunday’s game against the Raiders.

However, things are not looking quite as good for Foster right now. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Foster dislocated his shoulder and he is seeking a second opinion for his injury. That means that he will likely be out for this week as he decides what the best course of action for his injury is.

The Redskins will definitely miss Foster if he is out. He and Zach Brown had quickly become a solid linebacker corps with their run stuffing abilities and their good coverage skills. Brown is better than Foster at the latter, but still, the duo was a strong one.

The good news for the team is that they have Will Compton to step into the starting role. Compton was the starter last year and was great at setting up the team’s defense. Unfortunately, Compton is a poor run stopper as his tackling ability isn’t great. Because of this, Brown and the defensive line will have to work harder to stop Marshawn Lynch than they would have if Foster had been playing. Still, playing Compton is far better than most other alternatives.

Additionally, if Foster is out, it seems like the Redskins would activate rookie linebacker Josh Harvey-Clemons to provide depth. Harvey-Clemons flashed strong ability in the preseason and could be a playmaker in the future. For now, he can play special teams and spell Brown and Compton if needed.

Overall, the Redskins have to hope that the Foster’s injury isn’t a long term one. They can’t afford to lose him long term, so they have to get him healthy quickly. If missing this week will help him get back to 100 percent, they should do it.
