Redskins Live Game Blog: NFL Week 1 vs. Eagles
The Washington Redskins are taking on the Philadelphia Eagles today as they get the 2017 NFL season underway. Here’s our live blog for the game.
The wait is officially over. Today is the day. Washington Redskins football is back! After a long offseason, the team is squaring off against the Philadelphia Eagles in an early season NFC East clash. The Eagles are shaping up to be one of the better teams in the NFC, and they will provide the Redskins with an early test.
Washington definitely going to keep this contest close, but it may be a hard one for them to win. The Eagles are slightly favored to win this one, and we have that same result in our Redskins preview for the week.
Still, the Redskins are going to have a chance to emerge victorious in this contest. They are going to need to win in several points in the game. The most important thing they can do defensively is to stop the run, while the offense needs to see Kirk Cousins thrive to get going.
This is not going to be an easy matchup for the Redskins. They are going to have to play better than they did in the preseason if they want to start off with a 1-0 record. There will be ups and downs for the team, but Jay Gruden and his staff have to lead the team through to get the win.
With all that said, be sure to follow along with our live game blog here for updates on action throughout the game and the lead up to the start. And be sure to comment with your own thoughts below!
11:17: Vote in our poll about the game’s result! Right now, it’s looking like many are expecting a Redskins victory.
11:40: The Redskins inactives are out! We went 6-for-7 in our predictions, with the only difference being that Samaje Perine was tapped to play over Mack Brown. It will be interesting to see how much action Perine sees during the contest.
12:07: There was some concern regarding the health of Redskins receiver Jamsion Crowder. The third year man was dealing with a hip flexor injury, but he is active today. It appears that the concerns are overblown, and he should still be a major part of the passing attack.

12:19: For those wondering, this is the coverage map for the Redskins game, via our friends at 506 Sports. The Redskins will be playing on Fox at 1:00 p.m. in areas marked in blue on the map.
12:22: Ian Rapoport of NFL Network is reporting that the Redskins offered Kirk Cousins a five year, $110 million deal two different times this offseason. This would have been a sensible deal in the prior offseason, but with the quarterback market set to go up, it’s easy to see why Cousins declined the deal. With Derek Carr and Matthew Stafford making $125 million and $135 million respectively, Cousins is likely set to make more than the $110 million he was offered.
12:35: Less than a half hour until the game! The Redskins better be ready soon.
1:01: The national anthem has been sung, and we are just about ready to get underway. Hail to the Redskins!!!!
1:02: The Redskins are going to receive to start. They’ll be on offense to start the 2017 season!
1:05: Cousins tries to go deep to Terrelle Pryor, but overthrows him. Chris Thompson is met behind the line for a loss of one. But on third and 11, Pryor grabs a pass over the middle for a gain on 12. First down!
1:08: The Redskins stall out after converting the first down. Rob Kelley was pushed backwards for a two year loss and Cousins misfired on a couple passes. Realistically, one should have been picked. The Redskins punt to the Eagles.
1:14: After a couple of nice plays, including a sack by Preston Smith, the Eagles allowed a massive touchdown to Nelson Agholor. Carson Wentz simply danced around in the pocket until he found the open man. He looked like Fran Tarkenton. The Eagles now lead the Redskins 7-0.
1:21: After crossing midfield, the Redskins turn the ball over on third down. Cousins dropped back to pass, but he was strip sacked. The Eagles simply were able to push back Morgan Moses and overwhelm the interior of the line. Eagles ball just across the 50.
1:26: The Redskins allowed the Eagles to convert on a mid-length third down, thanks to a catch by Nelson Agholor.

1:27: FUMBLE! The Eagles throw a backwards pass that doesn’t work out too well. It’s dropped by Agholor and Mason Foster was able to jump on it. The Redskins get the ball back, trailing by a touchdown.
1:32: Terrelle Pryor dropped what would have been a touchdown, but the play is called back anyway. Still, Pryor has to be able to catch that ball. It was right on his hands, but it passed through his arms.
1:33: Redskins have to punt once again. They trail 7-0 with under five minutes left to go.
1:38: Zach Brown does it all himself, making three tackles to force a three and out! However, Jamison Crowder muffs the punt and the Eagles recover. They now have the ball in Redskins territory.
1:39: Carson Wentz has looked great in the pocket. He dodged a Mason Foster sack and then proceeded to complete a pass to Zach Ertz.
1:42: The Eagles are in the red zone threaten to extend their lead. At the end of one quarter, the Redskins are trailing, 7-0.
1:47: The Redskins were able to stop the Eagles on their first two goal to go opportunities, but they couldn’t stop them from scoring. Blount catches a short touchdown and the Eagles lead is extended to 13-0. The extra point was missed, so that was good news for the team.
1:56: Ronald Darby was carted off the field. The Eagles are now shorthanded at cornerback. Will the Redskins try to come back by exploiting the weakness at the position?
2:00: Thanks to a beautiful punt by Tress Way, the Eagles are backed up in their own territory. The Redskins defense will have to stop them, trailing 13-0 in the second quarter.
2:02: After the touchdown, the Redskins now trail by a score of 13-7. They’re back in the game!
2:10: Zach Brown was able to get a sack of Wentz, but it was wiped out by a big penalty for a chop block. Brown has looked good in his first regular season game as a Redskin and is on his way to producing a massive stat line.
2:13: The Redskins defense has looked very good so far, with the exception of the Agholor touchdown. Matt Ioannidis notches a sack on third down to force another punt by the Eagles. With less than 4 minutes left in the half, the Redskins have the ball, trailing 13-7.
2:18: We’ve officially hit the two minute warning, and the Redskins are driving. They have the ball inside the Eagles 40 and will have a chance to cut into the 13-7 Eagles lead.
2:23: Chris Thompson with an UNBELIEVABLE touchdown off a tackle breaking spin move to give the Redskins the lead! The Eagles will have a chance to strike back, but they now lead 14-13 for the first time in the NFL season!
2:28: The Redskins cornerbacks have made some excellent pass breakups in this game. Kendall Fuller and Josh Norman have been highly reactive and it is definitely helping the team’s defense.
2:35: The Eagles were able to drive for a field goal and they will take a 16-14 lead into the half. The Redskins continued to have solid coverage, and Bashaud Breeland nearly intercepted a throw to the end zone by Carson Wentz. The Redskins currently have the momentum, but they will start the second half on defense.
2:38: Be sure to vote in our halftime poll! It concerns the two players who scored touchdowns for the Redskins.
2:52: In the second half, the Redskins have continued to struggle with third down defense. This was one of their big problems last year, and they have already allowed a few conversions on third and long today. This needs to change if they want a chance to win the game.
2:53: Junior Galette appeared to get his first sack of his Redskins career, but it got called by Ryan Anderson. The rookie was offsides.
2:57: Josh Norman continues to show why he is one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL. He breaks up a screen pass to help the Redskins defense force a field goal. The Eagles convert for the points, but the score is only 19-14.
3:02: After the field goal drive, the Redskins are unable to do anything and Cousins was sacked twice. However, a defensive holding call against the Eagles keeps the drive alive. Unfortunately, Trent Williams is coming off the field, walking gingerly. Ty Nsekhe is into the game.
3:06: Trent Williams has returned to the game and had his ankle taped up. He is helping Cousins to find extra running room, as the quarterback has scrambled for 30 yards. He is currently the team’s leading rusher!

3:09: Cousins’ mobility is becoming a major factor for the Redskins in the second half. They are getting close to the red zone!
3:12: Kirk Cousins just threw a very nice ball to Terrelle Pryor, but it was broken up by talented young defensive back Jalen Mills. Just a good play all around, though some thought that Mills got there a bit early.
3:16: Jamison Crowder has been uncharacteristically quiet today, and he just bobble a pass going out of bounds. There’s a chance he may have caught it, but it was short of the line so the Redskins didn’t challenge. Dustin Hopkins connected on the field goal, and the Redskins now trail by a score of 19-17.
3:23: Bashaud Breeland is having a great game, and he is reminding many of why he was considered to be a potential No. 1 corner just a couple years ago. He broke up a downfield pass intended for Alshon Jeffery to force a fourth and long for the Eagles. The Redskins are trailing 19-17 at the end of the third quarter, but they are getting the ball back.
3:29: BIG GAIN for Terrelle Pryor to get towards the red zone! The Redskins are getting ready to take the lead!
3:31: Kirk Cousins just threw a very bad interception. Deep in the red zone, he over shot Jamison Crowder by a few yards and it went right to an Eagles defensive back. The Redskins had a chance to take the lead, but now the Eagles get the ball back leading 19-17.
3:40: Washington allowed Zach Ertz to convert a key third down, but they came back to actually stop the Redskins just three downs later. The Eagles punt, and they managed to down the ball at the 1 yard line. Cousins and company will have work to do.
3:45: The Redskins were unable to move the ball from the 1 yard line. They punt it back to the Eagles who will get the ball near midfield.
3:53: 4th and 1 for the Eagles. They kick a field goal to take a 22-17 lead. It’s the two minute warning. Will the Redskins come back? This is a great early season test for the team, needing a touchdown to win.
3:58: Morgan Moses got beaten once again, and Cousins got sacked. He fumbled it and the Eagles recovered it. The play is under review and seems likely to be overturned.
4:00: The ruling on the field stands. There just wasn’t enough evidence to overturn the call, though Mike Pereira and the Fox analysts thought it would be reversed.
4:06: Cousins was sacked at midfield. Just 30 seconds left, the Eagles are winning 30-17 and it looks like the Redskins will lose.
4:09: Kirk Cousins’ final pass skips short on fourth down. The Eagles will take a knee to end the game. Redskins drop to 0-1, suffering a 30-17 defeat.
