Kirk Cousins has proved he can play, but can he become an elite quarterback for the Burgandy and Gold? I challenge Cousins to elevate the Redskins in 2017.

It has been quite the journey for Kirk Cousins during his time in Washington. Now entering his third year as a starting quarterback, Cousins has made tremendous strides since being benched in 2014. He took the reigns from Robert Griffin III amid many questions. Now, he is the unquestioned starter for the Redskins.

Even still, Cousins needs to prove this season that he is worthy of a long term contract extension after being franchise tagged for yet another season

A devout Christian, Cousins attributes his success on the field to his religious beliefs. He’s made his faith known on several occasions in the past, per Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. Cousins made headlines last weekend appearing as a keynote speaker at Liberty University. At the event, Cousins said the following:

"One of the reasons God made me an NFL quarterback was to keep me close to Him. I prayed about it, and I do believe that the Lord, at least in my life, likes to use one-year contracts and not long-term contracts."

Cousins has played well against in the Eagles in the past. He has completed 63.5 percent of his passes and thrown for 1,579 yards. In addition to all of this, he has averaged a passer rating of 102.9, a touchdown interception ratio of 4-to-1, and most importantly, a 4-1 record.

Despite the solid career numbers by Cousins against the Eagles, I have a hard time seeing Cousins having a good game on Sunday. Hence, why I’m challenging him. Although I don’t think he’ll throw more interceptions than touchdowns I believe Cousins will struggle to find a rhythm early and often.

However, I hope I’m wrong. There were a few words from Cousins speech last week that stuck out to me. When he referenced his situation in regards to the tale of Moses and the Red Sea, he said the following:

"He wants me to sit there for a moment and go ‘God, you better show up.’ And then He parts the Red Sea."

And I’m sure all Redskins fans can relate to regardless of their religious background. ‘God, you better show up‘. Yes you Kirk Cousins. You better show up for the next 16 weeks. It all starts Sunday against the Eagles. So, put up your dukes Kirk, and make sure you lead the team to a win in the first game of the 2017 season.
