Matt Jones’  stay with the Indianapolis Colts was not a long one. The former Redskin was waived on Saturday afternoon after less than a week with the team.

The Washington Redskins made their cut to 53 just about a week ago now. During the cut period, they were forced to make some difficult decisions. However, one of their easier decisions came in regards to a former third round pick from 2015, Matt Jones.

Jones, the starter at the beginning of the 2016 season, fell out of favor with the Redskins coaching staff because of his inability to hold onto the ball. He struggled with fumbles and Jay Gruden was fed up with it and benched by the Redskins midway through the season. It was widely expected that the Redskins would part ways with Jones, but they kept him on the roster until cut day to try and get something from him. There were no takers, so he hit waivers.

On the waiver wire, there was interest in Jones, and the Indianapolis Colts ended up getting him. However, on Saturday, the team ended up waiving him due to a need at another position, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

It seems likely that the another team will want Jones. That said, it will not be until after the season opener.

There are still several teams that have a need at the running back position. Rapoport mentioned the Bears as a potential option, but their backfield looks pretty well set up for the moment after they got Taquan Mizzell off waivers last week.

The Green Bay Packers could use some insurance behind converted receiver Ty Montgomery. Two NFC East teams, the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants, don’t have lead backs, and Jones’ potential may intrigue them. The Baltimore Ravens could also use another potential starter, as Terrance West is only a decent option.

There is no doubt that Jones has potential. Last year, he was able to produce 4.6 yards per carry. Had it not been for his fumbling issues, he would have been regarded as a solid performer for the Redskins. He has talent, but he just needs to fix that problem.

If Jones can stop fumbling, then he will certainly become a solid option for the team that ends up with him. It will be interesting to see how quickly he lands a job and if he somehow lands back in the NFC East.
