The Redskins didn’t want to part ways with Derek Carrier without getting something in return. They got what they wanted early this afternoon.

Derek Carrier has shown his talent on more than one occasion this offseason. Often injured, he’s failed to latch on to a roster spot with the Redskins. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t valued elsewhere.

The Redskins have been trying to trade Carrier since the end of preseason Week 3, and their efforts finally paid off. Reports say Carrier has been traded to the Los Angeles Rams for a seventh round pick in next year’s draft.

The move is essentially a win for both sides. The Redskins managed to let go of a tight end talent and receive something in return as compensation. The Rams, meanwhile, get a player who can come in and produce right away. And Sean McVay is reunited with one of his former players. One has to think that Carrier has substantial upside in the Rams’ offense. He could see meaningful snaps right away.

The Redskins, meanwhile, will presumably move forward with four tight ends. Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis are penned in as the starters, and behind them, Niles Paul and Jeremy Sprinkle provide depth. Paul is a stout special teamer, and a leader on and off the field, while Sprinkle provides the team with rare length and athleticism at the position.

The team reportedly didn’t feel comfortable parting ways with Sprinkle, as his physical attributes are hard to come by. He didn’t do much this offseason, but that could change in the near future.

The Redskins getting a seventh round pick in this deal might not seem like much, but one would be wise to remember that the Redskins hit the lottery with their seventh round picks this year, claiming Joshua Holsey and Josh Harvey-Clemons, both of whom appear to be poised to make the final roster. Holsey, in particular, has flashed all through camp, and he’s virtually a roster lock. This trade was a win on both sides, but the Redskins perhaps have more to feel good about.
