The Redskins are reportedly in trade talks with multiple teams concerning tight end Derek Carrier.

Derek Carrier has had an impressive preseason, and, more importantly, a healthy one as well. His play has garnered the attention of Washington’s coaching staff, and apparently that of other teams as well. Per ESPN’s John Keim, the Redskins are interested in receiving compensation for the fourth-year tight end.

It makes sense that the Redskins would be uncomfortable with letting Carrier go with nothing to show for it. Carrier has often been overshadowed by the other tight ends on the roster, but he too possesses immense talent and potential. Many teams in the league have a dearth of said talent, and thus, the interest in Carrier is not surprising.

The trade talks likely mean that the team is comfortable moving forward with Reed, Davis, Paul, and Sprinkle at the tight end position. All except Sprinkle have impressed in the preseason, and Sprinkle has potential and will likely improve with time. The Redskins drafted him as a traits prospect, and so they have patience when it comes to the Arkansas product.

In the meantime, Carrier remains on the roster. But he’ll likely garner considerable interest, at least more than Matt Jones. Carrier hasn’t often been healthy for the Redskins, but when he has been, he’s shown talent and potential. In the near future, he should suit up for a different team. The Redskins have done well to increase his trade value, and he’s accumulated a reputation as one of the better backup tight ends in the league. It’s been a surprising career path for Carrier, who entered the league as an undrafted free agent. Since conquering that uphill battle, he’s struggled to break through as a starter. But now, he could get his chance.
