In a time where early returns are hard to come by for the Redskins, they appear to be getting just that from their current rookie class.

The Redskins have often had to wait to get considerable contribution from their draft classes. There are exceptions. The 2015 class saw them reel in five key players in three days: Brandon Scherff, Preston Smith, Matt Jones, Jamison Crowder, and Kyshoen Jarrett.

In hindsight, a few of those guys haven’t had the most favorable two year careers. But they did give the Redskins instant dividends when they were selected. And that alone is something to value.

The Redskins don’t have inept classes every year. 2012’s class was a historic success, with Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris combining to form one of the best rookie duos of their time. But in recent years, a common theme for the burgundy and gold has been the need for their rookies to develop. Many other teams receive immediate dividends from at least two of their rookies on an annual basis, but for the Redskins, that impact is more seldom seen.

That appears to be changing this year. In the first two preseason games, the Redskins have seen countless rookies flash in limited action. Jonathan Allen has been predictably stout, providing a steady presence that has so often been absent on the defensive line. His Alabama teammate, Ryan Anderson, has been just as impressive, contributing to a deep edge rushing core.

Fabian Moreau flashed in his first action, proving that his talent may have been more suited for an earlier round. Samaje Perine started out slow, but he showed on Saturday night why scouts were so excited about him on day three. The later rounds provide less dividends, but are still bountiful. Montae Nicholson showed potential as well in his first game action, and Joshua Holsey has been an absolute steal at the cornerback position.

It remains to be seen whether this early production will carry over into the regular season. But one thing is for certain. The Redskins seldom get this kind of production from their youngest players this early. And it is a very welcome sight.
