The Washington Redskins have made some minor roster changes. They added safeties Stefan McClure and Tim Scott while releasing veterans Josh Evans and Earl Wolff IV.

Throughout training camp and the preseason, it is common to see teams shuffle through certain players who are buried on their rosters. As they decide that a player has no chance to make the team, decision makers may elect to part ways with them as they attempt to find players that may make the roster. The Washington Redskins made a couple of roster moves like that on Thursday.

According to Stephen Czarda of Redskins.com, the team has elected to sign free agent safeties Stefan McClure and Tim Scott. To make room for them on the roster, they released veteran safeties Josh Evans and Earl Wolff IV. Additionally, the team waived Lou Young from the Injured Reserve with an injury settlement. These are probably just moves that will help the Redskins to get a look at more players as they prepare for the 2017 season.

McClure was a rookie during the 2016 season and spent most of the season on the Indianapolis Colts practice squad. Meanwhile, Scott has spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and the Cleveland Browns, each time on the practice squad. Neither player is a proven option, but they offer more upside than Evans and Wolff.

The most notable name of this transaction is Evans. From 2013 to 2015, Evans played in 47 games with the Jacksonville Jaguars, making 36 total starts. He was considered to be a high upside player in his youth, but he lacked the ball skills to be an overall effective safety in the NFL. The Redskins had him on the 53-man roster for two games during the 2016 season, but he never saw the field. There is a chance that Evans could land elsewhere as a potential depth player, but he is likely a fifth safety at best for a team.

As for Wolff, he saw action in 2013 and 2014 with the Philadelphia Eagles. he flashed some playmaking ability as a rookie, but never was able to play consistently enough to be a starter. He has bounced around the league since. Wolff also was the subject of a bizarre story, as he was kidnapped and robbed in early 2016 before signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

At the end of the day, neither player was likely to make the team’s final roster. Though McClure and Scott could have a chance to latch on as a depth player, they are probably just camp bodies. One may land on the practice squad, but these are likely minimal impact moves by the Redskins.
