Mack Brown possesses an intriguing combination of size, speed, and burst. He impressed in limited action last year. A practice squad player his whole career, he’ll have his work cut out for him if he wants to make the roster in 2017.

The Redskins revamped their running back stable with only one acquisition this offseason, drafting former Oklahoma bulldozer Samaje Perine in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. Perine and Robert Kelley are locked in as the No. 1 and No. 2 backs. Their partnership is an exciting one, and to have Chris Thompson compliment them as a third-down back only makes 2017 more thrilling.

As I said in a recent article, it’s “a battering ram and sledgehammer type deal, with a little mix of Tallahassee Thunder”. This group could be one of the most underrated in the league. But will the Redskins start the season with just those three? Or will a fourth sneak in?

More from Riggo's Rag

Mack Brown is the man on the fringe. The third-year pro flashed potential in limited action last year, action that climaxed with a blazing 61-yard touchdown run against the Chicago Bears in Week 16. Now in his first offseason where he carried over from the previous year, Brown hopes to keep the roster spot awarded to him last October.

The running back hasn’t been idle this offseason. He’s reportedly looked better in all aspects of his game, and per Steven Czarda of the Redskins’ official website, Brown has been working with one of the best.

"The 25-year-old [Mack Brown] linked up with fellow NFL running backs LeSean McCoy and Tevin Coleman to improve on his on-field technique while also adjusting his physical shape.“Those running backs made me quicker,” Brown told Redskins.com. “I had a track coach back home to work on my long distance speed. I got my diet back and lost about four percent body fat and gained about eight pounds of muscle. Every year is hard to make the team, but you have to make sure you give the coach another view. I have to be faster this year. I have to be quicker. I have to be better in the blocking scheme. Back home I did everything.”"

The Redskins started out with three last year, adding Brown early in the season. This year, the top three spots appear to be locked, so Brown will have to convince the Redskins to keep him aboard to serve as a change-of-pace back. He has the size and the motivation to succeed. Time will tell if it’s enough for the Washington Redskins.
