The Washington Redskins made a minor roster move on Wednesday afternoon. They signed defensive back Lou Young and released Shak Randolph.

It’s always interesting to see what happens during the late months of the NFL offseason. With most 90-man rosters set, teams often make small moves throughout June and July to test out high upside players that may have a chance to make their team. On Wednesday, the Redskins made a move to add a new player. They signed Lou Young, a defensive back previously of the Carolina Panthers, and waived Shak Randolph.

Young is a player that has bounced around the NFL over the course of the past three seasons. He played his college ball at Georgia Tech, where he was a solid cover guy who started for a few seasons. Young went undrafted in the 2014 NFL Draft, but signed on with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent.

After spending time on the practice squad with three different teams, the Panthers signed Young in 2014. He spent parts of three seasons on the team’s practice squad, but also was on the active roster for 2016. He did not record a stat, but he was on the roster for six games during the season.

With that said, Young’s experience with the Panthers could pay dividends for the Redskins. Comparatively, the released Randolph played his college ball at SMU but was only a member of the Redskins practice squad for the last month and a half of the season. He inked a future contract with the Redskins, but he was always a long shot to make the roster. The experience of Young just made him too good to pass up, and that came at the expense of Randolph.

Overall, this move may not have a very big impact. Young is still going to be hard pressed to make the team’s roster. The Redskins have some solid, young depth at the cornerback position, so there likely is not room for Young. Still, he could be a depth option or a player that may be signed off the street midway through the season. Either way, this gives the Redskins a chance to evaluate him.
