It remains to be seen who the Redskins will roll with at nose tackle in 2017. There are no surefire starters at the position. But project player Joey Mbu is reportedly gaining steam in the roster race.

Finding an answer at the crucial 3-4 position is certainly near the top of the Redskins’ to-do list this offseason. They appear to be making progress in that regard. Per the team’s official website, an unheralded player is garnering some attention as a starting option.

"At nose tackle, Joey Mbu once again worked with the first-team defensive unit with A.J. Francis anchoring the second-team and Phil Taylor working mostly with the third-team.These three – and potentially a few others – will be used at the nose tackle position when the Redskins are in their base scheme. Gruden said in March that he’s confident defensive line coach Jim Tomsula will “make a nose guard” based on his track record."

The term “once again” shows that this isn’t just a momentary glance in Mbu’s direction. The Redskins are looking for someone to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. And it appears that Mbu may be on the right track.

Mbu was the subject of a Washington Redskins Unheralded Players segment, highlighted as a oft-forgotten journeyman who could rise to the occasion this offseason, given his character and drive. I said the following of Mbu in that article:

"Mbu’s work ethic is known to be exceptional. And his size automatically provides him with a boost in the nose tackle competition. But too often, he’s shown a lack of strength and leverage on the field against opposing offensive linemen. He’ll have to eradicate this flaw in order to move forward."

There’s no one better to hone Mbu’s lacking skills than Jim Tomsula. The defensive line coach has long been lauded as one of the best in the league, and his expertise appears to be paying dividends.

Time will tell if unheralded player Joey Mbu is the answer to the Redskins’ run defense woes. He’s warranted a strong and careful look thus far. But there’s still plenty of practice left to go. Here at the Riggo’s Rag, we’ll keep you posted for any and all offseason updates.
