Maclin Brings Security

If the Redskins elected to sign Maclin, they would essentially be investing in a security blanket for Kirk Cousins. After all, the star quarterback just lost two receivers who recorded over 1,000 receiving yards each. Though the team brought in Terrelle Pryor to fill in the void for one, and Josh Doctson, a former first rounder, is waiting in the wings, the team needs to make sure they have proven players as depth.

More from Riggo's Rag

Pryor had a terrific season for the Cleveland Browns last year, but that was a small sample size. Before the last two seasons, Pryor had been a quarterback at the NFL level with little success. He changed and impressed, but there is some risk that he could regress. Furthermore, he is on a one year deal, so he may not be long for the Redskins.

Meanwhile, Doctson missed almost all of his first season with the Redskins due to an Achilles injury he aggravated in the early offseason. The Redskins tried to rush him back, and that ultimately cost him his first season at the NFL level.. While Doctson flashed in very limited reps, he may be injury prone or may need some extra time to develop. If that is the case, the Redskins would need a potential No. 1 or No. 2 guy to step into the lineup.

That is where Maclin would come in. Maclin could serve as the team’s top option until Doctson is ready for a bigger role. He could help to mentor the younger receivers, including slot man Jamison Crowder. It would be a solid fit for Maclin, and the move of Doctson to the No. 4 receiver spot would be an upgrade over the team’s depth players like Brian Quick and Ryan Grant.
