Jeremy Maclin was released on Friday afternoon by the Kansas City Chiefs. Though the Washington Redskins have a good deal of receiving talent, they should do their due diligence on Maclin.

One of the more surprising moves of the NFL offseason occurred on Friday afternoon. After two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, Jeremy Maclin, the team’s No. 1 receiver, was released in a move that was supposed to save the Chiefs money. Maclin had been scheduled to count $12 million against the cap in 2017. Now, his figure will be gone, but the team will front a $7 million bill in dead money over the next two seasons. That is a hefty price to pay for cutting a potential No. 1 receiver.

Though the Chiefs do have Tyreek Hill, this still seems like a rather rash move. Hill is unproven and has had off-the-field issues, so that may not work out as well as the Chiefs have hoped. Furthermore, Maclin could move to a potential playoff team and help them turn into a better contender. The Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens, and Dallas Cowboys could all use some upgrades in their receiving corps.

That said, the Washington Redskins are a dark horse team to target Maclin. Though the Redskins have a lot of young talent in their receiving corps, they are an unproven bunch. Adding Maclin could do a lot to help their team out.
