What should the Redskins draft plans be the 17th overall pick? Select Reuben Foster if he’s available.

If the Redskins are to rebound from a disappointing 8-7-1 record they’ll need to improve their defense. It’s been six years since the Redskins last drafted a defensive player in the first round. Washington passed on J.J. Watt in 2011, as they traded back and selected Ryan Kerrigan No. 16 overall. Fortunately for Washington, this year’s class has a ton of defensive talent. Reuben Foster is a player that can drastically improve the Redskins defense.

The Redskins front office did a solid job of bolstering its defense via free agency. Stacy McGee and Terrell McClain were added in the trenches. Linebacker Zach Brown was added to start at inside linebacker. On the back-end, D.J. Swearinger was signed to start opposite of Su’a Cravens. However, the Redskins need more on defense, especially within the front-seven.

Washington believes in the best player available philosophy, and could opt to chose a running back No. 17 overall. Dalvin Cook and Christian McCaffrey are tantalizing prospects but both could be off the board when the Redskins are on the clock. Reuben Foster however, might be available.

Foster made headlines at the Scouting Combine in February as he was sent home. He also will not be in attendance tonight at the draft. The front office has stated character will play a role in draft selections but to what extent is unknown. What is known is how badly the Redskins struggled to stop the run last year.

Foster was a terrific linebacker during his college days, and really emerged as a leader for the Crimson Tide. Although Foster comes with baggage, he would be an absolute steal for the Washington Redskins. He’s a top-10 talent and has been compared to former 49ers star Patrick Willis by Yahoo Sports’ Greg Cosell. Although Foster comes with baggage, he’s a talented player. Pairing Foster with Brown, will allow the Redskins to drastically improve at the inside linebacker position.
