With Cousins in Limbo, the Redskins Can’t Miss at No. 17

Last year the Washington Redskins whiffed at No. 22, at least for the 2016 season.  Josh Doctson may turn out to be a nice addition in 2017 but Washington cannot afford another mistake at No. 17.

Every day you can read another mock draft or an article suggesting who the Redskins should or will take with the No. 17 Pick. Most recently, our own Jacob Camenker had the team taking Haason Reddick out of Temple. Others say that they should take Alabama’s Reuben Foster, Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey, Michigan’s Jabrill Peppers, or many other options.

I have no idea who the Redskins will take for several reasons.  It’s hard to know who will be available at No. 17.  All of the aforementioned players may be gone.  If they are, the Redskins may want to they take Obi Melifonwu, a safety out of UConn. He is a 6-foot-4, 223 pound freak athlete. But I have no idea who they will even have as options.

What I do know for sure is that Washington cannot afford to miss.  With Kirk Cousins possibly or probably playing his final season in Washington and a very difficult schedule, the Redskins need a productive starter at No. 17.  They can’t reach or take a flyer.  When Roger Goodell announces that the Washington Redskins are on the clock, the brain trust needs to pick a solid starting player.

The Redskins have so many needs that they will have options when their name is called.  Safety, linebacker, edge rusher, defensive lineman, cornerback, offensive line, running back, wide receiver and quarterback are all needs.  Washington just needs to make sure that they pick a long term starter.  Another player with more potential may be available, but the Redskins need a no doubt starter.

Washington has 10 picks in this year’s draft.  With the 9 picks after their first pick they can fill needs and take some chances on high upside players. Hopefully they find a diamond in the rough. But with the first pick the Redskins need to hit a home run.  It doesn’t have to be a grand slam but it needs to it needs to leave the yard.
