BREAKING NEWS: Washington Redskins Agree To Terms With LB Zach Brown
The Washington Redskins have agreed to terms with free agent linebacker Zach Brown. He will fill a major need on the defensive side of the ball.
Over the course of the 2017 NFL offseason, the Washington Redskins have been very focused on upgrading their defense. After signing two defensive lineman and a safety, their defensive unit was looking slightly stronger. However, they still had a big weakness at the linebacker position, and they were expected to make a move in the NFL Draft to address this need.

On Monday, the Redskins made an excellent move. They brought in one of the top linebacker left on the free agent market, Zach Brown, and reportedly agreed to terms with him. The news broke via NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Adding Brown is a terrific move by the Redskins, and in retrospect, it is curious as to why they did not target him earlier.

Last season for the Buffalo Bills, Brown had a career season. He posted 149 combined tackles and recorded four sacks playing the middle linebacker position. In the Bills’ 3-4 defense, Brown used his athletic ability to be a playmaking threat. He really came out of nowhere to have a solid season after previously playing as a backup for the Tennessee Titans for two years.
For the Redskins, Brown will be solid in coverage, but will most importantly bring strong instincts to the table. He is a hard hitter, and his speed will undoubtedly help to improve the team’s run defense. It would not be surprising to see Brown paired up with Mason Foster as a starter, with Will Compton taking the primary coverage linebacker role in sub packages.
The only concern moving forward with Brown will be about his contract. Brown has only played at an elite level for a single season, so committing to him long term may not be a wise move. Perhaps the Redskins were able to get him on a short, “prove it” deal that will allow them to protect themselves in the event that he does not pan out.
